Treating Brontophobia, The Fear Of Lightning and Thunder With Hypnosis

by Alan Densky

Countless people around the world are afraid of lightning and thunder, a common condition named brontophobia. For as long as this phobia has existed, we have been searching for methods to fight it. Now there are many treatment selections used. To help eliminate this phobia, experts recommend certain hypnotherapy techniques that are proven effective in dissipating fears and anxiety.

Those with brontophobia experience an abnormal fear of storms. Loud, startling thunder and cracks of lightning can trigger nervousness and panic attacks in people with brontophobia. Other signs include a racing heart, sweating, and an intense sense of fear, to the point where a person feels ill.

For many, the fear of thunderstorms begins at an early age, when as children, we hide under the covers during a serious storm. Brontophobia can be particularly hard on children. Many frightened children feel helpless during bad weather, and their parents may also feel powerless to help them cope with their fears.

Despite its frequency in children, brontophobia can be triggered at any time in life, frequently after someone has an unpleasant experience such as getting an electric shock, which recalls a lightning strike. A stressful event such as surviving a natural disaster can also trigger an intense fear of thunder and lightning.

Some people may come to link loud sounds, the feeling of pain, or shock with rainy days, which can lead to a phobia. This phobia is so common that it is even observed in many animals; for example, many people report that their pet cats seem frightened during lightning.

Those with brontophobia try to avoid seeing or hearing storms. They may suffer nervous breakdowns during storm disasters such as floods. This can put them in harm's way if they are unable to function under circumstances which calls for them to stay calm and act quickly.

Those with brontophobia typically hate storm season, often suffering during times of the year when storms occur frequently. They might obsessively check weather forecasts and act extra cautious during periods of bad weather. To other people, this behavior may seem obsessive and paranoid. Phobia suffers may find this condition slowly taking control of their lives.

There are many techniques available for relieving brontophobia and other fears. Notable ones include talk therapy, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy tends to provide safer, quicker results and it is also non-invasive, having no side effects. For these reasons and many more, hypnotherapy has become a a common therapy.

Hypnosis is highly effective as a form of stress-relief therapy and has long been used to achieve relaxation. By beginning with stress-relief techniques, hypnotherapy helps tense, agitated phobia patients begin the process of recovery. When someone is feeling tranquil, it is easier for hypnotherapy techniques to direct the unconscious mind into a phobia-free thought process.

Nearly all phobias are connected to negative imagery or stimuli, which become associated with fear deep within the unconscious mind. For people with brontophobia, the rumble of thunder, the sight of lightning, or even the sight of dark clouds often provokes alarm. Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to dissociate fear from these triggers to provide powerful fear relief. One of the most effective techniques is named the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a form of hypnotherapy that is often used to treat fear-related stress. Named after its founder, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this form of approach uses indirect suggestions embedded in conversation, metaphors, and stories to eliminate a phobia. Indirect suggestions are more effective than traditional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because we tend to question, resist, and reject being told what to do. Suggestions which are hidden from the mind are more able to empower people to vanquish their phobias.

NLP techniques and Ericksonian hypnotherapy have an additional advantage over traditional hypnotherapy programs because they are designed to work for any phobia. Thus, a single program is effective for curing any phobia, or even more than one phobia if need be. Additionally, each program combines a variety of techniques to be effective for anybody.

For many, hypnotic therapy is the best treatment option, which delivers quick and long-lasting results. Hiding under blankets and feeling scared is not how a brontophobia sufferer should live. With hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, virtually everyone can vanquish this serious phobia.
